Today we know Highland Dancing as the traditional solo dance of Scotland. However, centuries ago Scottish regiments used Highland Dance as a form of exercise to keep the troops in shape and ready for battle. It was not until the early 19th century when Highland Dance evolved into a highly competitive sport. At the turn of the century, women began competing. With judges focusing on technical aspects, timing and general deportment, dancers are required to commit long hours of training and practice to be successful. Highland Dancers are admired for their athletic and artistic skill. They are an integral part of any Highland Games celebration today.
